The National Gallery

Last week some of our children from Year 5 were invited up to The National Gallery with other children from our FESI. Whilst there, the children participated in a workshop in art appreciation and story telling. They were introduced to the richness of the nation’s collection and practised their observational and visual literacy skills by focusing on three paintings from across the gallery. Through discussion, they explored how each painting was made, both physically and compositionally. They also thought about how there is a differing of materials and processes used by the artists over time. Through guided looking they examined how artists have composed the painting, used colour, light and tone and how the effects such as texture and perspective have been created. The children had a fantastic day and were impeccably well behaved. Whilst exploring the gallery they even spotted several of the paintings they have learnt about this year including Whistlejacket by George Stubbs.
