Terrific Teeth: Crafting Our Way Through Digestion!

This term, we are learning all about digestion, we had a super fun and creative activity to help us understand the role of teeth in this important process.

🦷 What Was Our Activity?

We made our own model teeth using air drying clay to show the different types of teeth in our mouths. Each type of tooth has a special job to help us break down food before it moves down to our stomachs. To do this, we had different colors of playdough to represent the incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.

Here’s what we learned:

  • Incisors: These are the sharp, flat teeth at the front of your mouth. They’re perfect for cutting food, like scissors!

  • Canines: The pointy ones! Canines are great for tearing food, especially meat.

  • Premolars: These teeth are a bit larger and flatter, used for crushing and grinding food.

  • Molars: The biggest and strongest teeth at the back of your mouth. They grind up food so it’s small enough to swallow easily.

🍎 How Does This Relate to Digestion?

We know that digestion is how our bodies break down food so we can use it for energy. Our teeth are like the first step in this process. They break food into smaller pieces so it can move down the esophagus and into the stomach, where digestion continues. Without our teeth, our stomachs would have a much harder job!
