Firefighters and Fun

gpurver

This week, in Ducklings, we are looking at how firefighters help us. We have been reading the story Charlie the Firefighter and today we have watched a video tour of a fire station. We found out a lot more about the equipment and vehicles that the firefighters use to put out fires and rescue people and animals. The children all thought about if they wanted to be a firefighter when they grew up and there was a real mix. The thought of helping someone, using the hoses to put out fires and driving the fire engines appealed to lots of children. However, the danger of real fire meant lots of children found this too scary to want to do.

This afternoon, we had chalk fires to put out and lots of the children enjoyed this. The children could also design their own fire engines and this was a big hit in our classroom, due to so many budding artists. We also had children choose to use the water to put out an imaginary fire on our climbing frame. The children found it fascinating that the wood changed colour when wet; this helped the children to see which part of the 'fire' had not been put out yet! We also discussed how slippery the wood became. An obstacle course was set up by the children to help make our firefighters fit and strong. This was a great team effort and it was wonderful to see how much more independent the children are becoming during their COOL time. Finally, no firefighting session would be complete without children taking the opportunity to slide down the fireman's pole!

As well as all this, we had children who opted to play in our home corner, others making magical potions (that turn whoever drinks it into an angel), Lego vehicle creations, den building and some very creative paper handbags. All of this in one afternoon, life for a Duckling is certainly a busy one!
