Year 3 had a lot of fun on Friday exploring charcoal and chalk. The aim of this session was to explore the qualities of charcoal, opening their minds to the mark making possibilities and introduce the children to the different ways of working with this medium.
The children used the charcoal to rub on its side across the paper, and then moved the dust around with their hand. Then the children used a rubber to take away the charcoal leaving whiter marks on their sheet. The children had time to explore the charcoal by holding it like a pencil and using the end. The children experimented with a dry brush to move the charcoal around, rather than their hand. Finally the children used white chalk to create white lines within their drawing.
This session was all about exploring what they could do and their creativity took hold. I cannot wait to see how their charcoal skills progress over the term. Well done Year 3!
