Over the past few days, our classroom has been transformed into a sensational science and sensory wonderland – all thanks to our very own pink oblek tray! You might be wondering: what on earth is oblek? Well, oblek is a fascinating, multi-textured substance that can change from a liquid to a solid depending on how you handle it. Similar in some ways to a non‐Newtonian fluid, it’s a bit like a magical mix between a milkshake and a playful, edible-like dough. Its fun, unexpected qualities make it a brilliant way to explore science and language all at once.
Our little explorers had an absolute blast with the oblek. They took turns pouring, scooping and transferring the substance, while discovering just how diverse its textures could be. With each playful move, the children used brilliant adjectives to describe what they felt. They said the oblek was sometimes gooey, slimy and gloopy, while at other times it felt dry, hard, or even a bit stretchy and solid. One moment it was as liquid and watery as a milkshake and the next it was as soft and yoghurty as a delicious strawberry treat!
To add an extra twist of fun, we mixed in red and pink letter sounds along with vibrant pom poms. When these pom poms were soaked in the oblek, they changed the way they felt, sparking even more excitement and curiosity. The children eagerly experimented with the textures, comparing how the letters and pom poms felt before and after meeting the magical oblek.
The activity wasn’t just about sensory play—it was also a fantastic opportunity to learn new descriptive words. Our budding scientists and wordsmiths enthusiastically used terms like sticky, nice and strong to capture their experiences. This playful exploration not only sparked their creativity but also reinforced their vocabulary in a memorable and hands-on way.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the lovely shades of pink and red made this activity all the more special. The classroom was filled with laughter, learning and a whole lot of love as our little ones celebrated the joy of discovery.
